About the TOAG Internship

TOAG is…what she has always been … an EXPERIMENT, a desperate attempt:
To equip affluent, institutionally-nurtured, comfort and security-loving Westerners who will eventually work abroad to live and love like Jesus until joyful, reproducing communities of God’s Kingdom are formed to bless some of the most unwelcoming places on earth.

To Learn, Interns Must Do. TOAG is about first living here how we will eventually live over there. And so we are a Jesus Community; we don’t just learn about reproducing Kingdom Communities. We share Jesus Stories; we don’t just memorize Bible verses. We love our Bibles and study God’s Word joyfully, but we also examine other influential books such as the Qur’an and we learn to share what they teach about Jesus the Messiah. Yes, we learn about other religions, but we also enjoy hours of dialogue with those who differ with us, but whom we now consider our friends. We learn a simple inductive study method (takes ~ 30 minutes); then we inductively study the Bible daily for the next year … and we fast, we pray, and we practice spiritual disciplines.  We obey the ways of Jesus, and we grow to be like Him. In fact, we develop a personalized Curriculum for Christlikeness which we use to help us become like the One we treasure most. Sure, we read about Moses and Mary and millions following Jesus, but more important, we visit in markets, mosques, and malls.  We find friends who enjoy talking about Moses and Mary … and our wonderful Jesus. After all, we are learning to follow over here the Ways of Jesus we will live over there.

We figure that, to advance the Kingdom of Heaven, we must probably unlearn some of the ways of our highly structured, rather expensive, staff intensive, slow to reproduce western style Christianity, the only faith community we have ever known. And we figure we must also relearn the forgotten ways of former days when the early followers of the Way exploded from 20 thousand to 200 million in a couple centuries. We must keep experimenting till the DNA that flows through the believers in China flows in our veins as well.  Until God can use us to incubate millions of Kingdom Communities not just in China, but among every people on earth, especially those we have historically forgotten or classified as “our enemies.”

TOAG is not a school. No intern will write an exam, receive a grade or earn a degree. But interns will learn! They will learn to follow the Ways of Jesus now, preparing for the day when they will live and work abroad.

Our nine-month, after-hours internship has three core passions, and we are blood-earnest to provoke all three in those we intern:

  • a passion for Jesus,
  • a passion for His Kingdom and
  • a passion for being Strategic … in that order.

Some books interns will read during TOAG:

  • Miraculous Movements, by Jerry Trousdale
  • Divine Conspiracy, by Dallas Willard
  • The King Jesus Gospel, by Scot McKnight
  • Missions and Money, by Jonathan Bonk
  • Christ of the Indian Road, by E. Stanley Jones
